Chhath Puja in Nepal

Chhat Puja is one of the popular festival of Hindus. Chhat puja is celebrated mostly in Bihar, Jharkhand and Terai Regions of Nepal. The people from Mithila region of Nepal basically celebrate this festival with the great importance. The festival is observed from the fourth day of lunar calendar which is dedicated to God sun. Chhath is the festival of prayer and purity observed with somberness and strict discipline. Devotees pray Sun (God Surya) for their well being and believe that the sun will help in curing diseases and ensures longevity and prosperity of the whole family. Chhath puja is performed during October-November (Kartik) just after the largest festivals Dashain and Tihar.

The festival is observed with the faith that the Sun God fulfills wishes if 'araghya' is offered with complete dedication and devotion. It is a festival connected with purity, devotion to the Sun God who is considered as the source of life on this earth and is regarded as the deity who fulfills all our wishes. The festival is with an aim to express thanks to Sun God for offering energy to earth continuously enabling the environment suitable for the people to live. Along with the Sun God people worship 'Chhathi Maiya' on this day. During this festival devotees assemble at the nearby ghats of rivers, ponds and take a holy dip bath.
