Search resumes for Israeli tourist missing in Nepal

Israeli tourist missing in Nepal

The rescue operation to locate an Israeli tourist missing in Nepal for a week resumed Sunday morning after search teams temporarily halted activities overnight.

Rescue personnel began the search for 42-year-old Amit Reichman on Thursday, after he failed to return from a hiking trip four days earlier in the Annapurna region in the north of the country.

Rescuers took a break after working through Saturday until nightfall.

Reichman was vacationing with his girlfriend in the Himalayas before his disappearance. According to his Facebook page, the two spent the Rosh Hashanah holiday in Kathmandu and hiked around the area.

Reichman remained in Nepal after his girlfriend returned to Israel on October 14.

Reichman was last seen October 16 near the Fishtail Guest House at the Mardi High Camp. He left for a short hike, taking only a small bag, and leaving all of his luggage at the guest house. A group of German tourists reportedly met him on the trail shortly after he departed.

Reichman, a father of two, is an engineer at Israel Aerospace Industries.

The Israeli embassy in Nepal has been notified and are seeking any information.

“The Foreign Ministry is ready to support the family and help locate the missing man,” it said in a statement last week. “We hope that he will be found healthy and safe.”

Nepal is a popular destination for Israelis, with hundreds hosted every year by Kathmandu Chabad House which is famous for holding the world’s largest Passover seder.
