Paddy is the first crop as compared to other crops that are cultivated in Nepal. Paddies can be produced every three months and mostly in Nepal paddies are cultivated during the monsoon season and in march-April. Rice is the key source of food and Nepal is importing rice worth more than 1 billion rupees per month as the rice production in the country could not be increased as per the demands. As it is the main crop of Nepal, national economy has been going out for importing and if the production of rice increases, country's economic growth rate also increases.
Nepal has been celebrating Asar 15 as the National Paddy Day since 2004, UN had declared as the International Paddy Year. The world food problem has been created by urbanization, crop diversification and low investment in agricultural research, so every year world is facing the big problem related with food. Because of Nepal's heavy reliance on rice, the government has declared a day during the monsoon season as the "National Paddy Day." Asar 15 is considered as the best day for paddy cultivation with the holiday activities and traditional cultural performances.
National Paddy Day: Nepal is celebrating National Paddy Day on Asar 15 (30 June 2015). On this day, known as Asar Pandra, farmers begin the annual rice planting season and mark the day with various festivities such as preparing rice meals with muddy water, mud being a symbol for a prosperous season. The agricultural sector contributes about 60 per cent to Nepal's gross domestic product.
